Battle

On February 20, 1864 over 10,000 Union and Confederate troops met west of Jacksonville, FL in a place called Olustee. The Confederacy was attempting to keep vital Florida supply lines open and the Union was hoping to hasten the end of the war. The battle is considered a victory for the Confederacy and after just over two hours of intense fighting, there were 1,861 Union casualties and 946 casualties on the Confederate side. The Union forces retreated back to Jacksonville and the war went on for another year.
