Checkpoint Charlie

This is the site of Checkpoint Charlie, the former gateway between East and West. Unfortunately, considering the significance of what once took place here it is an embarrassment to the good people of Berlin. Between the street vendors, tourist shops and poorly dressed German actors pretending to be American soldiers, this was a sad sight to behold. If you go to Berlin and don't see this, you won't have missed much. Click on each photo for a larger version. Copyright 2005 by Tony Klimas, all rights reserved.

  • One of the main activities seems to be having your photo taken with these Germans wearing various pieces of American military uniforms. I especially liked the facial hair and full dress medals on the young man. Perhaps I am harsh, but having worn the uniform at one time in my life, I tend to take these things seriously.

  • Do you think she could tell how silly I thought this whole thing was?

  • For some tourists, it's not even worth getting off the bus. I noticed several tour buses simply drove by and slowed while people took photos.

  • Postcard? Flag? You can get it all right here!
  • Right after I took this photo, I walked up and quietly asked the 'soldier' if he would kindly stop dragging my flag around on the ground. I explained to him that many Americans would find this deeply offensive, myself included.
  • Didn't feel like standing in line, so I skipped the museum. I've actually heard it is pretty interesting, however.
  • It is the details that count...if you look carefully, you will notice in the former West Berlin, the signal not to walk is a little man standing like this...
  • ...and in the East, the signal not to walk is a little man with a military style helmet and his arms out for emphasis.
  • And this is from the West looking to the East.
