Lens Test - Consumer vs. L glass : I've had some trouble walking into events (a concert, for example) with my 70-200 F4L. I love this lens, of course, but for those times when I have to leave it at home, I purchased a Canon EF II 55-200 zoom. This lens is nice an compact, easy to cary, has a fast focusing USM motor and seems very sharp as this simple lens test shows. Worth checking out if you're looking for a modestly priced walk around zoom and don't want the heft or cost of L glass.

This test was done using a 20D on a tripod, AWB, ISO400, 1/200 shutter speed, Sigma DG500 Flash, 10 feet from subject. No retouching - so pardon the white balance!

Canon 70-200 F4 L samples : Some quick samples with the 70-200 F4 L. Have to say - this lens appears to be worth every penny - well built - very nice handling - great contrast and sharpness. Copyright 2004, by Tony Klimas. Please contact me for use.

Tokina ATX 80-400 samples : Nothing scientific here, but these are some sample test shots with my new Tokina ATX 80-400.

These are right out of my camera, shot in TV mode, Parameter 2, AWB at ISO 400. Some of these were taken wide open and others were stopped down a bit. All were hand held. The lens itself is very well built, at least compared to my Canon consumer lenses (80-200 4.5, 50 1.8 and the DR Kit lens). There is also a shot of the moon in my favorites gallery that was done in raw and processed in C1 plus I applied the Ultra-Sharp lite filter in Adobe PSE.

These photos are unprocessed but when I applied some light USM on a few of these, I was very happy with the results. So far, it seems like a nice lens for those on a budget.

Tokina has a $60 rebate now, so my price out the door for this lens from B&H was around $390.

Canon Digital Rebel - Samples : I used to have some sample shots done with the Canon DR. I've since moved these to other galleries or removed these. I didn't know what to do with these - so I left them here. Some of my first pics with the digital rebel.

The DR is a great camera (make that an awesome camera). Canon seems to push it as the digital SLR for the masses but I'm not sure I agree. If you're looking for ease of use, convenience and simplicity, this may not be the best choice.

On the other hand - if you are confused by circles, often preview the depth of things (like fields) and have dreams about L glass and breathtaking bokeh but don't know where to start... This is the camera for you!
